The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the tally a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine saves to ensure the London club went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising the match official to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's side up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils duties at both ends of pitch

After a drab weekday performance in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a only attempts on target, the manager chose the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's absence - notched his second in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have faded slightly and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their striker situation are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of established strikers - had netted just a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having room and time to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, as well, was unable to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. The majority of Everton's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham box.
