"When are you speaking to Haim?" an inquiry reads. "I wanted to ask if I can become their extra sister."

There is only one problem: The sender also wants to be the Haims' additional sibling. Furthermore, we are not alone. A host of famous admirers have also coveted the role.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career playing gigs at local delicatessens with their family. Today, they are multiple Grammy Award contenders.

Similar to the most iconic bands, they're a close unit. Their videos repeatedly depict them striding in sync down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such pure happiness you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That's the greatest compliment. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate people to start a band."

"Therefore everyone gets an invitation to be the next member of Haim."

Historic Recognition

The band have called into home, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now processing the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in the running for the award.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the honor is deeply felt by the trio.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant achievement," says Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the women that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The record came out of a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that unique liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The themes detail endings and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to actively work on blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Style

That developed resilience required a fresh approach – more raw and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Collective Humor

The trio's candor fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their personal tales.

Someone broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Future

One can easily sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an international fan base.

But the sister act will forever be their number one commitment.

"We have been playing music since I was four," shares Alana. "There is no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still going strong."
